Biography
Bio Ever since a young age, I’ve had a strong passion for the arts and music. I grew up in Union, Michigan, a small town located on the Indiana border, where I attended White Pigeon Public Schools. I had the same art teacher, Martha Starmann from 1st - 12th grade. She allowed me to explore my creative potential, which led me to further my education in the arts. After High School, I attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College, where I continued exploring ceramics and music. I transferred to Grand Valley State University where I was deeply influenced by the beauty and geological features encapsulating the campus. After going on geological excursions to the Canyon lands and the Canadian Rockies, I became interested in the locality of clay and creating works reflective of the environment from which it came. After receiving my BFA in 2006, I was accepted into graduate school at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I continued researching local history, ecology and geology and found Southern Illinois to be rich and diverse. I combined my interests of music making with art making and created a body of work that creates sounds through interaction. The forms were created out of local clay and inspired by my environment. For the last three years, I've managed the Craft Shop ceramics studio at SIUC and taught classes to kids and adults. I also taught a beginning ceramics course to college students as the teacher of record. I received my MFA in ceramics in August of 2010. I am currently running my own business, CMS Ceramics. I teach workshops and sell my work through the internet and art fairs. Chris Scamehorn |
